Special kits available through Bereaved Families of Ontario - York Region (BFOYR) are doing double duty by supporting the organization's programs and saving butterflies.

In the past, the Butterflies of Hope event has been held in person in Newmarket with participants able to release a monarch butterfly in memory of a loved one and come together with the community, this year, the organization is doing things differently.

"This year, we want to show our gratitude to the monarch butterfly for it's symbolic support over the years. The monarch has faithfully represented hope, healing and support as we each learn how to navigate our personal journey of loss after a death. The Monarch reminds us that while our lost loved ones have transitioned beyond this life, our loving memories keep us connected forever," said Barbara Bathurst, executive director of Bereaved Families of Ontario - York Region.

To show their gratitude, participants can purchase a "save our butterflies" kit that includes everything you need to create a memorial garden, which will also serve as a safe haven for butterflies.

Bathurst said this is especially important as the monarch was recently classified as endangered and put on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's red list.

"This year we want to give back by responding to the 'cry of the butterfly' - creating a better environment of hope and healing for the monarch as it entered the endangered species list in July 2022," she said.

The memorial gardens can be started indoors in a pot and then later planted at a memorial site or displayed on a balcony or deck.

The kits can be purchased through BFOYR's website for $50 for one or $100 for three. The money raised through the sale of the kits will support the organization's programs.

"All proceeds will be used to help keep all of our grief healing peer support programs free of charge for every member of our beautiful York Region," Bathurst said.

You can order a kit anytime between now and mid-December, with Bathurst adding that they would make a great Christmas present. Pickup is free but delivery costs extra. For more information you can also contact BFOYR's support team at [email protected] or 905-898-6265.
