Agriculture and diversity innovators in Bradford West Gwillimbury have a chance to win government awards, and town council wants to nominate one of its own committees.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is now accepting applications from primary producers, processors and agri-food organizations for the 2018 Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence. The deadline is May 25.

As well, the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration is accepting nominations for the Champion of Diversity Award under several categories: inclusion and diversity, cross-cultural understanding, and business leadership in immigrant employment. The deadline is May 15.

At a Bradford council meeting May 1, Deputy Mayor James Leduc and Coun. Gary Baynes suggested Coun. Raj Sandhu’s BWG Diversity Action Group be nominated for the Champion of Diversity Award.

“I think it is really deserving of that award,” Leduc said.

Coun. Gary Lamb also joked Mayor Rob Keffer, a dairy farmer, should also be nominated for the agriculture award.

“I could nominate you, Mr. Mayor, for being the best milk producer in Simcoe County,” he said.
