Kids solve a mystery at the Bradford library (5 photos)

It's been a summer of crafts and parties at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library and cultural centre.

Nearly two dozen young Sherlocks flocked to the BWG Public Library on Thursday afternoon.

They decoded clues, followed the trail and solved a ‘murder’ mystery: Who killed the Butler?

Along the way, they had fun with crafts that included their own Fingerprint Pillow, a Deerstalker cap (the kind worn by Sherlock Holmes), and a magnifying glass.

It was the last in a series of summer parties for children at the library, this time geared towards older kids and pre-teens, who were ready for the challenge.

Admittance to the event was by reservation only. But to get inside the Zima Room, each guest had to first find their own name in a ‘word search.’

Crafter Michelle De Gasperis admitted that coming up with the challenges and preparing the crafts were perhaps the toughest things she has done so far this summer, and the hardest work. The hats alone –18 of them – needed to be assembled using a glue gun, needle and thread.

Summer is beginning to wind down at the library, as the start of the new school year approaches.

The TD Summer Reading Club wrapped up with a special event and prize presentation on Aug. 16, at 1 p.m., marking a return to regular children's programming at the library.

On Aug. 26-30, the library offers ‘Welcome to Kindergarten’, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. to noon. The program introduces tots entering Kindergarten for the first time this fall, to skills that include lining up, putting away belongings, circle time and crafts – away from their parents or guardians for a full hour.

'Welcome to Kindergarten' is free, but registration is required. See the library guide on line, at bradford.library.on.ca.
