During ‘Parade’ on Thursday night, the 37 Bradford ‘Orville Hand’ Air Cadet Squadron welcomed two special guests from the Bradford Lions Club.

Lions President Jennifer Pegg and past president Bob Pegg were on hand to watch the young cadets as they marched and drilled. The Lions then presented a generous gift of $500 from the Club, to support activities for the Cadets.

37 Bradford Squadron meets Thursday evenings at Fieldcrest Elementary School in Bradford, where Cadets between the ages of 12 and 18 learn about aviation and aerospace, leadership, citizenship, drill and other topics from their instructors, before heading into the school gym for the weekly Commanding Officer’s Parade.

On Feb. 6, the Cadets also held an Effective Speaking competition, at the Squadron level.

Suggested topics ranged from ‘What does bravery mean to you?’ to the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Cadets could also choose their own topic, as long as it dealt with Cadet life, science and technology, aviation, or Canadian history or citizenship.

The winners, as chosen by Squadron officers, will have the opportunity to go on to Wing/Regional, Provincial or even National levels of competition.

Participation is optional, but the goal is to “provide an opportunity for Air Cadets to increase their self confidence, and increase their ability to reason, organize and express ideas,” according to the Air Cadet League of Canada.
