HOLLAND LANDING - With Dec. 3 marking International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Michaela Blakslee, 9, of Holland Landing, shows that having an amputation doesn’t stop someone from living a vibrant and fulfilling life. Embracing the help of artificial limbs and adaptive devices, she’s able to fully participate in her favourite activities.

Michaela was born missing her left arm as well as part of her right hand and foot. As a member of the War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, she is eligible for financial assistance for the cost of recreational and everyday prostheses and daily living aids.

“Michaela is a very active girl and can do everything that everyone else can do, just in a different way,” says her mother, Tracie. “With the help of artificial limbs funded by The War Amps, she can ride her bike, do push-ups, go horseback riding and bake. She was also fitted with a myoelectric arm that allows her to pick up and hold objects.”

The War Amps encourages child amputees to foster a positive attitude towards their amputation and to explore any activity that interests them. Danita Chisholm, Executive Director of the CHAMP Program, emphasizes that Michaela’s determination and zest for life serve as an inspiration to those around her.

“We receive no government grants, but thanks to the public’s support of The War Amps Key Tag Service, we can continue to empower amputees, helping them to embrace life with an amputation and to reach their goals and unlimited potential.”
