Local church celebrates Thanksgiving by giving back to the community

Greater Life Community Church hosted its sixth annual free Thanksgiving dinner on Friday evening

It was a night of giving and gratitude at the sixth annual Greater Life Community Church Thanksgiving Dinner.

On Friday evening, members of the community were welcomed to a free festive feast made my volunteers of the church to celebrate Thanksgiving at St. John’s Presbyterian Church.

It is a tradition that members of council attend the event and serve meals to the guests.

Mayor Rob Keffer, Deputy Mayor James Leduc and Councillors Ron Orr and Peter Ferragine were also present to help serve the meals.

“We do it every year,” said Coun. Ferragine.

“Did you bring your notepad to write things down?” joked Coun. Orr to Coun. Ferragine.

Pastor Eaton Hope Grant is the man behind the church who meets every Sunday morning at the BWG Library at 10:30 a.m.

But he doesn’t take credit for the Thanksgiving meal, saying it is the community who makes events like this possible.

“This is us fulfilling our purpose, and at the end of the day, Jesus is the answer,” he said. “If we can make a difference in the community, that’s what we do.”

“An event like this is fulfilling our purpose. If we can show love, at the end of the day God is love.”

There was an overwhelming amount of food– turkey, carrots, peas, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and gravy with apple, raspberry and pumpkin pie and whipped cream for dessert, all generously donated by members of the community, including Bradford grocery stores Zehrs and No Frills. Mayor Rob Keffer’s wife, Jean graciously donated the carrots, potatoes and fixings for the night’s meal.

The team split up the cooking duties, with some of the volunteers taking home the turkeys to cook and then everyone arriving at St. John’s Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. to prepare all the sides and fixings for the 7 p.m. dinner.
