More than a health and fitness centre, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka prides itself on developing a unique ‘centre of community’ and a sense of belonging.
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka serves over 50,000 people each year and provides programs and services that suit the needs of all ages and stages of life. You’ll often find children alongside seniors, families spending quality time together, and neighbours reconnecting.
Rob Armstrong, CEO of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka says all YMCA programs and services are designed to help individuals grow in mind, body and spirit. “From developing health initiatives with our community partners that target chronic disease, prevention and recovery to improving literacy and social isolation, the Y provides a diverse and socially inclusive place. It’s a place where everyone has the opportunity to get active, participate in community programs, volunteer their time, and feel a connection to their community."
At the YMCA health and fitness centre on Grove Street in Barrie, memberships are flexible and designed to suit individual needs. Members can take part in group fitness classes, get support from a personal trainer or simply go for a leisure swim.
There are low impact programs for seniors or those recovering from illness and high-intensity programs for those wanting to build strength and endurance.
Children can also participate in Y Kids programs, join leadership programs, or visit the stay and play area.
Creating a sense of belonging is what truly sets the YMCA apart. “In today’s society, there are fewer and fewer opportunities for people to engage with each other and develop a sense of belonging. We have members who have been at the Y for 40 or even 50 years. The Y is their home, their family, where their friends are and where they go. That’s vital in an increasingly isolated world,” said Armstrong.
Future plans for the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka include building a new Barrie Y and developing more strategic collaborations with community partners. “We’re excited about the future and are very thankful to our community and donors for supporting us and allowing us to continue to build healthy communities today and for generations to come.”
