Locals can't help falling in love with peachy delights at farmers market

Homemade peaches and cream flakies from Sweet Annabella’s in Bradford West Gwillimbury sold out in 10 minutes

Peach pies, peach tarts (including a peach butter tart), peach cobbler, homemade peaches and cream flakies – Tammy Jackson of Sweet Annabella’s stocked up for Peach Fest at the Bradford Farmers’ Market on Saturday.

She sold out early. “The flakies went within 10 minutes,” Jackson said.

She still had plenty of non-peach pies and tarts available, and a banana peanut butter crumble muffin - a tribute to Elvis, who made an appearance at the market in the guise of singer Russ Clayton.

The peach cobbler was also an homage to The King. “It was Elvis’ favourite,” said Jackson. “I did the research,” looking up the recipe for an authentic version online.

Over at the Kazak-Stand, chef Natalie Dubé sold out of her peach cobblers and peach turnovers, although she still had “a peachy husband,” said Waleed Kaszak, who served up prepared calzones, Jamaican patties, pizzas and colourful beet hummus.

The Polish Baker, Ryszard Surdyk, had less success with his peach-inspired creation, a peach, strawberry, coconut spiced rumball.

“I learned a valuable lesson,” Surdyk said. “The strawberries take over – not enough peach!” Customers had to make do with his fresh breads, bagels, pretzels and strudels.

When Bradford West Gwillimbury Mayor Rob Keffer arrived at the Peach Fest, the only peach-inspired treat he found was a muffin, filled with chunks of fresh peaches, sold at the Lake Simcoe Coffee Co.

But there were baskets of fresh peaches, peach jams and chutneys, and plenty of fresh produce available at the market, held in the east parking lot at the BWG Public Library at 425 Holland St. West.

The Bradford Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., until Thanksgiving. Coming up in September: mark your calendars for the Butter Tart Festival, Sept. 15.
