Monster Mash raises the roof while collecting $930 for charity

Spooky community dance party supports Community Hope Chest

Residents of Bradford’s Green Valley community got into the Halloween groove for a good cause this weekend.

The Green Valley Neighbourhood Committee held their fourth annual Monster Mash dance party for the community at St. John’s Presbyterian Church Oct. 21.

Unlike in past years when the event was held at the Green Valley Park, being indoors allowed the festivities to include a disc jockey from Black Book Events, a magic show by Mel Jones, a display themed around The Addams Family by Jen Feeney Events, a variety of snacks provided by residents and sponsors, plus a costume contest for kids in which James Commisso won scariest costume, Lucy Rozycki won most creative costume and Lucas Campos won for cutest baby costume.

“Overall, it seems like the Monster Mash was a resounding success, bringing the community together for a memorable Halloween celebration and contributing to a good cause,” Anastasia Orlando, neighbourhood committee member said via email. “It was a lot of fun and we’re definitely going to continue doing it indoors from now on.”

The 200 guests in attendance had the option of purchasing raffle tickets for a chance to win more than $1,000 worth of prizes donated by sponsors, including a pair of diamond and gold earrings donated by Bradford Jewellery owner and Ward 7 Coun. Peter Dykie, which was won by Guish Rodriguez.

Other prizes included:

  • restaurant vouchers from local eateries
  • kids’ fitness programs
  • kids’ books
  • chiropractic services
  • hair services
  • car detailing
  • Halloween treat bags
  • bakery gift cards
  • event rentals
  • and more

The $930 in proceeds from the raffle are scheduled to be donated to the Community Hope Chest by CONTACT Community Services.

The Community Hope Chest helps people in need access food, prescriptions, eye wear, translation services, appointments, and other necessities to maintain their housing, physical and emotional well-being, according to CONTACT.

“We believe that this event ... reflects the spirit of unity and generosity that defines the Green Valley community,” Orlando said.

While the event was free to attend thanks to the support of local sponsors, spots had to be reserved via Eventbrite and sold out quickly.

Other committee members include Jen Feeney, Casandra Balugas, Susanne Battaglia-Monteleone, Neha Thakordas and Dominika Stopel.

The party also had the support of six students who were able to fill volunteer hours by helping to set up and take down the event.
