Last week, I talked about the advantages of our digital library for audio and ebooks. This week, I am going to talk about our digital newspaper and magazine app, PressReader.

With your Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library card, you have access to thousands of news and magazine publications written in more than 60 languages, both current and back issues, on your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop.

I am going to sound old now, but when I was a kid, I can remember waiting for my dad to bring home the newspaper every evening so I could read about what interesting things were happening in the world.

If only 10-year-old me knew one day I’d be able to access all the news publications I wanted at the click of a button.

With PressReader, you can now peruse the news — sans ink stains — whenever and however you want. Same with magazines. I remember spending anywhere from $7 to $10 for a magazine at the grocery store, but now I can read them all for free.

Don’t get me wrong; I still enjoy picking up a good, old-fashioned hardcopy paper on a Sunday and doing a crossword or flipping through a Cosmopolitan by the pool, but with PressReader, I love it for easy everyday reading.

There is no more squinting at the fine print or getting lost in the large, folded sections of the newspaper. I can zoom in and out of articles and scroll through the pages methodically. There are no ads or pesky pop-ups on the page, just uninterrupted reading with no distractions. You can also bookmark, save, and share any of the articles with others.

During the pandemic, we discontinued our subscriptions to hardcopy magazines and newspapers, relying solely on PressReader.

Like some habits formed out of the pandemic, such as grocery order pickup and Plexiglas dividers, we are happy to say our digital newspapers and magazines are here to stay.

For those missing tangible copies of the newspapers, we recently brought some of the daily Toronto newspapers back into circulation.

There are hard copies of the National Post, Toronto Star, and Globe and Mail delivered to us daily, and they can be found on our main floor in the southwest corner.

To peruse our selection of magazines and newspapers available for free to read on PressReader, visit here.

If you need help accessing the app or logging in, give us a call at 905-775-3328, ext. 6100, and someone will help you get set up.

’Til next week.

Happy reading.
