The number of charges across the region has decreased dramatically in recent weeks

A Newmarket event venue has been charged under Ontario’s reopening act, receiving one of just two charges laid in York Region last week.

The charge was laid by York Region Public Health at Madsen’s Greenhouse at 160 Bayview Parkway in Newmarket between Monday, May 31 and June 6.

The business was issued a fine totalling $880 for a lack of COVID-19 safety plan and lack of signage.

York Region's COVID-19 enforcement task force laid just one other charge issued in the past week. It was laid by York Region Transit, however, details on this charge were not revealed.

Between May 31 and June 6, there were 730 inspections carried out at businesses and 216 compliance education activities.

This represents a big drop in ticketing after 10 charges were laid the week before with 859 inspections completed at that time.

In total, since COVID-19 enforcement began in March 2020, public health, bylaw, and other enforcement agencies have laid 1,390 charges, completed 66,531 inspections, and undertaken almost 30,000 compliance education activities.
