Ontario reports 3,947 new COVID cases Sunday

Sunday's report includes 4,239 recoveries and 24 new deaths

Public Health Ontario has reported 3,947 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 25).

Today's report includes 4,239 recoveries and 24 new deaths.  

The April 25 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 41,157 active cases, which is down from 41,473 yesterday. 
  • 2,126 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 2,277 reported yesterday. 
    • Public Health anticipates the number of hospitalizations could potentially increase as more than 10 per cent of hospitals did not submit data, which is common on weekends
  • There are 851 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (up from 833 yesterday) and 596 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 600 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 46,694 tests were processed yesterday. 
  • Another 25,641 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 13.8 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 4,094 new cases reported today, 1,136 are from Toronto, 901 cases are from Peel, and 406 are from York Region.

Variants of concern (Ontario-wide)

  • 52,398 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • 164 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • 347 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil. 
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccines

  • There were 99,535 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 24, down from 126,694 administered on April 223.
  • As of 8 p.m. on April 24, the province reported 4,626,903 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 360,354 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 445,351 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 396,283 recoveries and 7,911 deaths, of which 3,914 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.
