Ontario reports 4,505 new COVID cases Friday

Today's report includes 4,698 recoveries, 34 deaths, and 221 new hospitalizations

Public Health Ontario has reported 4,505 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 23).

Today's report includes 4,698 recoveries and 34 new deaths.  

Today's deaths include one person between 20 and 39 years old, five people between 40 and 59 years old, 15 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 13 people over the age of 79 years old.

The province has reported 221 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and 40 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The April 23 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 41,735 active cases, which is down from 41,962 yesterday. 
  • 2,287 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 2,350 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 818 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (up from 806 yesterday) and 593 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 588 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 56,206 tests were processed yesterday resulting in an 8.8 per cent positivity rate. 
  • Another 31,363 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 13.7 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the 4,505 new cases reported today, 1,257 are from Toronto, 1,232 cases are from Peel, 412 are from York Region, and 96 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Today's new cases include 793 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,685 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,401 people between 40 and 59 years old, 555 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 64 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 133,872 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 22, down from 134,920 administered on April 21.
  • As of 6 p.m. on April 22, the province reported 4,400,674 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 355,208 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 437,310 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 387,712 recoveries and 7,863 deaths, of which 3,913 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,942 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 203.1 cases per 100,000 people, which is up 4.5 per cent from last week (April 7 to April 13).

Simcoe-Muskoka 

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 87 new COVID cases in yesterday's update.

There are 1,142 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 9,726 cases of COVID-19 with 7,950 of those cases recovered and 218 cases ending in death. 

There are 41 people from Simcoe County and two people from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19.

To date, 153,878 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of a vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 24 per cent of the region's population. 

The weekly incidence rate in Simcoe-Muskoka region is 117.2 cases per 100,000 people, which is a decrease of 3.3 per cent over the week of April 7 to 13.
