If you are a holly jolly kind of person who cannot wait for Old St. Nick to come to town, you are in luck — Christmas is coming early to Bradford West Gwillimbury.

BWG council voted Tuesday evening to allow a pop-up Christmas store in the old Royal Bank property, which the town now owns, at 26 Holland St. E.

The store will run Nov. 1 to Dec. 27, feature the work of local artists, and 20 per cent of the proceeds will go toward local charities.

While the exact details of what the store will offer still need to be ironed out, council approved the temporary use of the empty building, just east of Simcoe Road, in order to get the discussions and planning started.

After being approached by residents about the store, Deputy Mayor James Leduc brought the vote to council. He said there would also be some painting and teaching aspects to the store.

While all members of council supported the pop-up store, Coun. Mark Contois asked that town staff make sure the space does not have any obstructions inside that could be potential liabilities.

Coun. Gary Lamb also shared his concern that it be clear the store would be a one-time use of the property.

“It’s a pretty valuable piece of property downtown,” he said.

“It’s strictly for Christmas,” responded Leduc. “It’s not going to be leased in the near future. We’re still looking for someone to lease it.”
