Volunteers from the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre braved the heat and the crowds, selling “Gwilly Pins” to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Children’s Charity at Carrot Fest.

The felt carrot pins with googly eyes are meant to mimic Gwilly, the mascot of Carrot Fest.

The craft circle at the local seniors centre made 1,135 of the pins, and sold all but 40 at their booth at Carrot Fest.

Thanks to donations from visitors and from the centre itself, the seniors will be presenting a cheque for $2,000 to Toronto’s Ronald McDonald House.

Programs at the Danube Centre, located at 715 Simcoe Rd., will be starting up again in September. Programs range from the Goldenaires choir, which meets on Sept. 4, to shuffleboard, line dancing, bid euchre, poker and the Varga Art Group. In addition to the regular clubs and activities, a number of special events are scheduled:

Election information for Seniors. On Wednesday, Sept. 5, staff with the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury will present a municipal election workshop for seniors, checking to ensure seniors are registered and on the voters’ list, and explaining the new balloting system. The session starts at 9:15 a.m., is free, and open to all seniors – not just members.

Monthly Luncheon: The members-only lunch for September will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thurs., Sept. 20. Thanks to a generous donation from Holland Gardens retirement centre, the luncheon will only cost $5, for pork loin with gravy and applesauce, mashed potatoes, vegetables, dessert, tea or coffee.

Memories with the Legends: Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Ricky Nelson: Legends tribute artists will entertain with the music of yesteryear at the Danube Centre, Saturday, Sept. 29. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at the centre, or call 905-775-0612.

Mark your calendar: Monday, Oct. 1 is National Seniors Day, and the Danube Centre and CHATS Community & Home Assistance to Seniors invite everyone to a Pancake Brunch at the Centre, 715 Simcoe Rd., 11 a.m. to noon. Pancakes will be served up by firefighters and South Simcoe Police, and entertainment provided by Blue Sky Bluegrass Band. Cost is a donation.
