The Senior of the Year award will live on in Bradford West Gwillimbury, council voted this week.

The town’s Committee of the Whole, made up of council members, originally voted last month to cut the prize from the annual Civic Awards and add in others for hero/bravery and public service.

Instead, at a meeting Tuesday evening, council voted to keep the seniors award, along with the new categories.

Coun. Gary Baynes moved to reinstate the seniors award, which was agreed upon by all other members of council.

“This was just an oversight,” said Coun. Gary Lamb.

Mayor Rob Keffer said the local winner of that award is then nominated for a provincial seniors award, and “that’s why I’m in favour of re-adding seniors and recognizing the work that they do.”

Council also approved a recommendation to extend the Civic Awards nomination period from July 2 to the following May, and include descriptions for each award.
