Sonics U16 road trip to Cornwall a success (4 photos)

The U16 South Simcoe Sonics won Gold this weekend at their tournament in Cornwall

South Simcoe Sonics U16 boys won gold at the Cornwall Lions Invitational this weekend.

They opened the tournament by beating  Brockville Blazers 80-50.  After a short rest the Sonics lost a back and forth battle to Arnprior Valley Pride 55-50.

On Sunday they crossed over to play the first place team in the other pool, the unbeaten Cornwall Lions.  With a goal of making it to the finals the entire Sonics team played well in defeating Cornwall 77-63.  This set up a rematch with the Arnprior team that had bested the Sonics team in pool play.  With a desire to avenge the loss, the South Simcoe Sonics built a 20 point lead and held off a strong push at the end to win the Gold medal game by 61-50.

This was the second Gold medal for the team this season and follows a Silver at their home tournament last weekend.  OBL league play begins Mar. 21 as the boys look to repeat their Ontario Cup Championship Gold medal from last year.  Special recognition to Brison Atherly who won Player of the Game, three out of four games.
