Southlake honours staff, volunteers taking 'patient care to next level'

The recipient of the inaugural President’s Award is Dr. Alisha Kassam, pediatric oncologist and palliative care physician at Stronach Regional Cancer Centre

More than 30 leaders, physicians, volunteers and team members at Southlake are being recognized by their peers for their commitment to "leading-edge care."

The staff-nominated Champion Awards and scholarships recognize exceptional individuals for their commitment to excellence and dedication to patient care.

“The Champion Awards is one of Southlake’s most important events of the year and it’s one that I am personally inspired by,” said Arden Krystal, president and CEO in a news release. “I read all the incredible nominations each year to hear from staff and physicians how their colleagues give such great care to patients. It brings me so much joy to know how they have taken patient care to the next level.”

Six new award categories were added this year, including a new President’s Award as a special tribute to Arden Krystal, who is retiring at the end of December. The President’s Award recognizes an individual who exemplifies unwavering dedication to the organization, compassion for patients and families, excellence in their role, and significant contributions to team culture at Southlake.

The recipient of the President’s Award is Dr. Alisha Kassam, pediatric oncologist and palliative care physician at Southlake’s Stronach Regional Cancer Centre, and an associate professor at the University of Toronto.

Kassam has dedicated her career to caring and advocating for Southlake’s youngest patients and families as they navigate challenging journeys in pediatric cancer. She is also a leader in palliative care and is enhancing care at Southlake for seriously ill patients through innovation, research and education, the news release stated.

“I am honoured to be the first recipient of the Southlake President’s Award,” said Kassam. “This recognition is not only a reflection of my work but a testament to the impact we can have when we come together with a shared purpose. Every day I witness the strength and resilience of patients and families facing the realities of cancer. This award is a symbol of our shared dedication to providing compassionate high-quality care during some of life’s most challenging moments.”

In addition to the 15 Champion Awards, Southlake offers three annual scholarship awards made possible by donors.

“Southlake is committed to a culture of continuous learning and each year I am inspired by the transformative impact these awards have on staff,” said Jennifer Ritter, president and CEO, Southlake Foundation. “Through the generosity of our donors, the scholarship awards empower dedicated individuals to soar to new heights, fostering excellence in health care and unlocking their full potential.”
