There’s still time to donate to the Bond Head Lions Club’s food drive.

Every May, the Bond Head Lions Club has held an electronics collection, used clothing collection, and a food drive for the Helping Hand Food Bank in Bradford.

While the Lions set up a drop-off for electronics and clothing at the Bond Head Community Hall, volunteers would drive the streets in a school bus borrowed for the occasion, going door-to-door in the hamlet to pick up donations of non-perishable food.

Over the past seven years, the Lions have collected a total of about 16,000 pounds of food from the community, and given students an opportunity to earn their community service hours by volunteering.

But not this year. This year, COVID-19 has led to the cancellation of the 8th annual Food Drive.

Instead, the Bond Head Lions launched a Virtual Food Drive about two weeks ago, asking the community to make a cash donation to the food bank, instead – or to call Helping Hand volunteers at 905-775-2824, to schedule a drop off of needed non-perishable food items, from pasta sauce to soups and breakfast cereals.

The online fundraiser, which wraps up on May 12, is being hosted on Canada Helps. Donors can click here, select Fundraise, then ‘Find a Fundraiser’ and type in ‘Bond Head Lions’ in the search bar. Click on the page and choose ‘Donate Now,' to make a financial contribution that will go 100 percent to the food bank.

So far, response has been good, said Brian Harper. “They put it online, and sent out 500 flyers, to Bond Head and Bradford,” he said – and to date, the drive has raised at least $1,975 for the Helping Hand Food Bank.

“The Lions would like to thank all the community volunteers who have helped with this food drive over the years,” said organizers - helping to keep the shelves at the food bank filled.
