Town raising flag for Autism Awareness Day this weekend

Flag raising will take place in front of the downtown courthouse this Saturday

The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury will be hosting a flag raising in front of the downtown courthouse this Saturday, April 2, for Autism Awareness Day.

The day is observed annually around the world to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorder. More than 100,000 Ontarians are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

Bradford resident Nicole Kim has been spearheading the town's flag-raising events every year for the past eight years, but this year she has decided to take a step back and is looking for someone else to take over her role.

Kim moved to Bradford in 2003. Her son was diagnosed with autism at two-and-a-half years old. Now that her son is in his teens, Kim says she is ready to pass the flag-raising duties on to someone new — someone from the community who is an advocate for people with autism.

Every year, Kim would co-ordinate with the town and members of the community to put on a large event in the downtown core, with giveaways, entertainment and music.

"It was so heartwarming to feel the love and acceptance by so many," she said. "If it could help one person feel like they mattered or help someone be more accepting, then I did my job."

This year's flag raising will take place on Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m. in front of the Bradford Courthouse with the mayor and members of council.

Kim will also be there to show her support.

Anyone interested in taking over Kim's role can contact her directly at [email protected].
