The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is grooming the next generation of animal caregivers through its Unleashed Future Vet Program, an innovative behind-the-scenes camp in Stouffville and Markham for kids who dream of becoming a veterinarian.
Registration is now open for the Unleashed Future Vet Program, which runs on Saturdays. The Ontario SPCA Provincial Education & Animal Centre in Stouffville runs a five-week program beginning Oct. 19. The program is divided into two age groups: kids eight to 10 years of age and children 11-13.
The Ontario SPCA’s Markham Cat Adoption & Education Centre will also be offering the Unleashed Future Vet Program from its centre in the Thornhill Community Centre & Library. This program kicks off its four-week program on Oct. 26, with options for children six to seven years old and for 8 to 10-year-olds.
The Unleashed Future Vet Program includes a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into caring for the animals at the Ontario SPCA, as well as hands-on animal education.
Kids will also learn about pet behaviour, and will make enrichment toys for animals awaiting adoption. Sessions geared towards older children will include animal health examinations, pet first aid, animal enrichment, careers in animal care and more!
“The Unleashed Future Vet Program is part of our humane education programming geared towards youth to encourage and empower them to be a more informed, respectful and compassionate generation,” says Elizabeth Westover, manager of the Ontario SPCA animal centres in Stouffville and Markham. “Our goal is to give kids a fun, safe environment to learn about animals in the hope that they will be inspired to one day choose a career in animal care.”
