Christopher Rossi has created PowerPlay Pop, a hockey-themed tabletop game.

An Oro-Medonte man who grew up in Orillia is marrying two of his passions in a bid to stickhandle success in the business world.

Christopher Rossi, a passionate product developer and avid hockey enthusiast, has created PowerPlay Pop, an "innovative tabletop hockey experience" that was launched this week on Kickstarter.

PowerPlay Pop promises to captivate hockey fans and tabletop gamers alike with its unique blend of strategic gameplay and the excitement of managing a real professional hockey team, explains Rossi.

PowerPlay Pop immerses players in the competitive world of hockey, challenging them to build the ultimate dream team and dominate the ice. Drawing inspiration from the dynamics of real professional team management, the game requires players to make strategic decisions on player acquisitions, salary management, and building a winning strategy.

“It’s not all just about strategy,” says Rossi. “Players engage in head-to-head Pop-games, creating a rapid-fire showdown on almost every turn.”

The gameplay revolves around skilfully moving the aluminum trophy toke — modelled after the Stanley Cup — around the board, and strategically collecting player cards to assemble a team of all-stars. Each player card boasts its own skill level and salary, compelling players to make calculated choices to optimize their team's performance without breaking the bank.

As gamers bolster their rosters, their trophy tokens level up with magnetic rings making it easy to see who’s in the lead. Furthermore, as teams strengthen, the dice popper representing their game score also levels up, giving them an edge in every Pop-game.

Once a player reaches 100 points or a predetermined lower target for a faster game, the playoffs commence. Players engage in a best-of-seven tournament, competing for the title of PowerPlay Pop Champion in intense showdowns reminiscent of real professional hockey playoffs.

"With its innovative gameplay mechanics and immersive experience, PowerPlay Pop promises to be a must-have addition to any sports fan’s gaming collection," says Rossi.

It's been a wild ride creating the game, he said, noting he hopes others enjoy it as much as he does.

Rossi has deep roots in the region.

"I've been a Simcoe County resident my whole life, from Kindergarten at Couchiching Heights Public School in Orillia all the way to high school at Barrie North Collegiate," he explained.
