A Barrie man faces numerous charges, including cocaine possession, after he allegedly left the scene of a crash late Tuesday night.

Shortly before midnight on July 11, Barrie police responded to a failure-to-remain collision that had just taken place at the intersection of Anne and Tiffin streets.

Upon arrival, police say officers spoke with the driver of one of the involved vehicles.

The driver reported that he was stopped for a red light at the intersection and was waiting to continue southbound on Anne Street, according to police. A northbound vehicle reportedly failed to stop for the red light and drove toward the other car, striking it on the passenger side, which resulted in significant damage.

The driver of the northbound vehicle engaged in a brief conversation with the other driver, but then fled the scene, police say.

The suspect was found a short distance away and, "based upon observations that were made," police say he was placed him under arrest for operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drug.

As he was being taken into custody, police say a small quantity of suspected cocaine was located. The man was further advised that he was also being charged with possession of a Schedule 1 substance.

As a result of the investigation, a 32-year-old Barrie man has been charged with:

  • Fail to stop after an accident
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance
  • Operation while impaired - drugs
  • Failure to comply with release order- other than to attend court
  • Failure to comply with probation order
  • Failure to Stop at a red light.

The accused was held for a bail hearing, which is scheduled to take place later today by video with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie.
