Provincial police closed Highway 400 south of Barrie on Friday afternoon due to extremely poor conditions.
At about 4:30 p.m., OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said there was "near-zero visibility" on the highway at Innisfil Beach Road. Traffic was being diverted off the highway and police were responding to numerous collisions.
The highway was closed northbound from Highway 89 and southbound from Mapleview Drive in Barrie.
"If you don't need to be on the roads, please stay off," Schmidt said. "If you're stuck on the roads, it's going to be a slow drive wherever you are. This lake-effect snow is causing essentially zero visibility."
The sergeant called the roads "extremely slippery and treacherous." He urged drivers to use their full headlighting system and to give themselves ample space.
