INNISFIL - An Innisfil man received a five-year sentence after pleading guilty in connection with a drug seizure that prompted a public warning about "purple heroin."

On Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, Traffic Unit officers conducted a RIDE stop in Innisfil which resulted in a foot chase after the driver fled. A search subsequent to his arrest resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of drugs including 96 grams of purple heroin.

Purple heroin is a dangerous street drug commonly made from fentanyl and/or carfentanil and heroin and depending on the purity could contain several hundred lethal doses of fentanyl.

Fentanyl is 100 times stronger than morphine and 40 times stronger than heroin. Carfentanil is 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times more so than morphine. A fatal dose of fentanyl and carfentanil can be as little as two milligrams.

On April 28, 2020, in Barrie court, Jacob Buchanan, 31, entered a guilty plea to Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking in fentanyl and cocaine. He received a sentence of five years in jail on the fentanyl and two years concurrent on the cocaine.

Following the seizure of the suspected "purple heroin," South Simcoe Police Service issued a warning to residents to be aware that the deadly drug was in the community.
