Life sentences handed out for deadly 2018 shooting in York Region

The last two men accused in a 2018 homicide in Richmond Hill have been sentenced to life in prison.

On Dec. 11, 2023, a jury found Mohamad El-Zahawi, 36, of Toronto and Cory Chung, 23, of Kitchener both guilty of first-degree murder, according to a York Regional Police news release.

On Jan. 12, 2024, they received automatic life sentences with no chance of parole for 25 years from Justice Joseph Di Luca.

They were among seven people charged with first degree murder in 2020.

Following preliminary hearings, charges against two of the accused were stayed, while a third was discharged.

Abdelaziz Ibrahim, 22, of Hamilton died in custody while awaiting trial.

In early 2023, Thomas Sliwinski, 37, Brantford pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a 12-year sentence.

The charges are linked to the murder of 33-year-old Soheil Rafipour, who died in hospital after gunshot wounds, after the shooting Monday, Dec. 24, 2018 at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Barnwood Drive in the area of Bayview Avenue and Stouffville Road in Richmond Hill.
