FERGUS – Police say a relationship that started online two years ago led to tens of thousands of dollars being taken from one person's bank account.

Wellington County police now say a suspect has been charged with fraud and theft.

Police said that in July 2022 they entered into a fraud investigation after it was reported that in June 2021, the victim met the accused online.

Through the course of their relationship, the accused asked the victim for money several times.

Between November 2021 and July 2022, approximately $150,000 was taken from the victim's bank account without the victim's consent, police said in a news release.

Following an investigation, police said this week a 20-year-old Innisfil resident has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on June 20.
