A 48-year-old Schomberg man faces several charges after a South Simcoe Police Service officer attempted to stop a driver using a cell phone.

On Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, around 11:30 p.m., an officer conducting traffic enforcement on Holland Street West in Bradford observed a man using a cell phone while driving. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the driver continued to proceed eventually pulling into a plaza. When speaking with the driver, police detected an odour of alcohol. The driver was arrested and transported to South Division after refusing a demand for a roadside screening device test.

48-year-old Eric Hehn of Schomberg was charged with offences including:
  • Refusal to comply with demand
  • Drive while using a hand-held communication device
  • Fail to stop on right for emergency vehicle
  • Drive while under suspension
  • Fail to comply with release conditions

His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days.

Drivers talking on mobile devices, either hands-free or hand-held are up to four times as likely to be involved in a crash.  That conversation can wait. Put away your phone when driving.

FYI: Refusing to take a drug or alcohol test is a criminal offence. In addition to an immediate licence suspension and impoundment of your vehicle, you will also face a $550 penalty and a $281 licence reinstatement fee.
