Man suffers life-altering injuries in Vaughan collision

Police arrested a suspect who fled the scene on foot; investigation revealed stolen vehicle was involved

Investigators with the York Regional Police have charged a 24-year-old suspect with multiple offences following a serious collision in Vaughan that left one person with severe injuries at Highway 7 and Highway 27. 

Police say a black 2023 Jeep Wrangler was travelling eastbound on Highway 7 when it collided with a Dodge Caravan with four occupants travelling northbound on Highway 27.

A man from the Dodge Caravan was transported to the hospital with life-altering injuries. The other three occupants were taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to police. 

The suspect fled on foot after the collision.  

A short time later, the suspect was located nearby and arrested. 

Lovepreet Gharu, 24, of no fixed address, was charged with the following: 

  • Dangerous operation - cause bodily harm 
  • Failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Operation of a conveyance while prohibited 
  • Breach of probation 
  • Fail to comply with judicial release order 
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 
  • Unlawfully possess the master key

The investigation revealed the Jeep Wrangler had been reported stolen in Toronto on May 15.
