City police responded to a shooting in downtown Barrie on Nov. 24, 2023. Officers cordoned off an area at the back of a building on Lakeshore Mews, near Simcoe and Mulcaster streets, with police tape as they investigated the 4:30 p.m. shooting.

City police have arrested the man wanted in the November 2023 downtown Barrie shooting that left a woman fighting for her life.

On Monday, May 20, just before 11 p.m., David Sheldon White, 28, of Mississauga, “attended Barrie police headquarters, where he surrendered,” police said in a release on Thursday afternoon.

He was arrested and is charged with attempted murder using a restricted firearm or prohibited firearm, as well as numerous firearms and drug offences.

On Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, at 4:51 p.m., officers from the Barrie Police Service (BPS) responded to a report of a shooting that had taken place at the rear of a building at 133 Dunlop St. E.

Upon arrival at the scene, police said they saw paramedics tending to a 60-year-old woman, who sustained a “serious gunshot wound.”

She was taken to the local hospital and later transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where she underwent treatment for a life-threatening injury.

The woman recovered, “but it did take an extended period of time due to the extent of her injuries,” Barrie police communications coordinator Peter Leon said on Thursday.

According to the BPS release, police conducted a “very detailed and comprehensive investigation that ultimately led to police issuing a warrant of arrest for White, who was wanted for the shooting.”

The accused was held for a bail hearing and was later remanded in custody.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.

White is scheduled to appear via video at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Thursday.
