Two suspects wanted after allegedly fleeing in a car that had heroin and cocaine inside on Monday were apprehended Tuesday afternoon by city police at a residence on Ferguson Drive in Barrie.

Two suspects wanted after fleeing a car with heroin and cocaine inside on Monday were apprehended yesterday afternoon by Barrie police.

On Tuesday, nearly 24 hours after the collision on Cundles Road East occurred, city police say officers were called to a northwest Barrie residence for a disturbance, according to a news release issued this morning.

Arriving officers “very quickly” determined the man and woman involved were wanted in connection to Monday afternoon's crash.

After a short period of time, a 47-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were taken into custody on Ferguson Drive and transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where police say the investigation continued well into the evening hours.

“From the outset, we knew who it was we were looking for, and we were constantly checking back on their whereabouts, and when we got this call for service yesterday afternoon, we knew exactly who it was we were dealing with,” Barrie police communications coordinator Peter Leon said this morning.

The woman has been charged with three counts of possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine, heroin and fentanyl), while the man is charged with operation of a vehicle while prohibited, dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to stop at a crash resulting in bodily harm, driving a vehicle with cannabis readily available, and three counts of possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine, heroin and fentanyl).

Both of the accused have been held in custody for a bail hearing, which is scheduled to take place today by video, at the Barrie courthouse.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.

Following the crash on Monday afternoon, in which the driver and passenger fled the scene, police say officers discovered suspected heroin and cocaine in the vehicle, as well as drug-related paraphernalia.

The collision, which happened shortly before 4 p.m. on March 18, involved a black car travelling eastbound on Cundles Road East which reportedly drifted across a number of lanes of traffic and struck a white SUV, which was heading westbound.

Police say the man who was driving the car had passed out behind the wheel, which led to the collision.

Police say the driver of the SUV sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, which happened near Lions Gate Boulevard.

Although a canine track was conducted, police say the suspects managed to elude apprehension.
