The South Simcoe Police Service is reminding residents to be vigilant when it comes to protecting your personal information and finances.
We continue to receive reports of what is known as the "bank investigator" fraud. There are variations, but basically the scammer calls asking for your help to catch a bank employee who has been stealing money or claims to be helping you resolve suspicious transactions on your bank account.
Please remember, financial institutions will never ask for your help with an internal investigation or ask for funds to be transferred to an external account for security reasons. Any time you receive a call from someone claiming to be from your financial institution, law enforcement or a service provider, hang up and call the company or organization directly to verify.
Police would also like to remind residents to be alert to text scams. These are different types of unsolicited electronic messages that attempt to obtain personal information about your identity, online accounts or money.
At a glance, the texts can appear to be from a legitimate source. These phishing messages are designed to trick you into giving your personal information, often by clicking on a link. Police urge you to think before you take action and always verify the source. Watch for spelling mistakes in the texts. Follow your instincts. If it feels wrong, it probably is.
