Police on scene at Newmarket apartment, armed man barricaded inside

Police are requesting citizens to avoid the area of Davis and Lorne, where there is a visible police presence

York Regional Police are on the scene at an apartment building near Davis Drive and Lorne Avenue in Newmarket where a man is armed and locked inside an apartment unit.

Police were called to the building for report of a person with a knife at 1:55 p.m. May 19, said Sgt. Clint Whitney, media relations officer.

Officers who attended located the man and are currently investigating. Whitney said the situation is on-going and motorists are advised to avoid the area, where there is a large police presence.

There is no threat to public safety because the incident is contained to one apartment, Whitney said. He also said he is not aware of any impact to other residents of the building at this time.

Officers are permitting residents to enter and exit the building.

One resident, who did not wish to provide her name, said when she asked an officer for information about what was going on, she was told to just go to her apartment.

"How can you feel safe going inside when the police are out here with big guns?" she told NewmarketToday.

Whitney said if people can avoid the area that would be helpful to first responders.

This story will be updated when more details are provided.
