The South Simcoe Police Service conducted intensive traffic enforcement operations over the Easter long weekend, resulting in a total of 185 individual traffic-related stops. Among these, 113 charges were laid ranging from speeding to impaired operation. In addition to traffic related occurrences, the SSPS responded to 181 police calls for service related to a variety of investigations such as noise complaints, assaults, thefts and frauds.
One standout traffic incident over the weekend involved an 18-year-old holder of a Class G2 license, who was charged for speeding at 174 km/h in a 60 km/h zone along the 9th Line of Bradford West Gwillimbury on Good Friday. This stop resulted in the vehicle being impounded, the driver being charged with mulitple Highway Traffic Act charges and seeing his licence suspended at the road side.
Additionally, enforcement efforts uncovered two instances of G1 license holders operating a vehicle without a properly licenced accompanying driver seated in the vehicle, a violation of graduated licensing regulations.
Furthermore, the South Simcoe Police Service conducted five RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) programs over the course of the long weekend. These initiatives serve as a proactive measure to combat impaired driving and ensure the safety of all road users.
Unfortunately, the weekend saw a total of seven collisions, with two of these incidents resulting in arrests for impaired driving. These sobering statistics serve as a reminder for the ongoing need for heightened awareness to prevent tragic outcomes on our roadways.
The safety of our community remains our top priority, and we are committed to taking action to address traffic violations and urge all motorists to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic laws to prevent collisions and protect lives. Over the past five years South Simcoe Police have investigated 22 fatal motor vehicle collisions resulting in 26 deaths on our roadways. Many of these collisions attribute alcohol or speed as aggravating factors. The South Simcoe Police Service extends its gratitude to all residents who support efforts to maintain road safety and encourages those to promote responsible driving behaviors throughout our communities.
