A 40-year-old Whitchurch-Stouffville man faces several impaired-related charges in the death of a 68-year-old Whitchurch-Stouffville man killed in a collision on New Year’s Eve in Markham.
Stanley Choy is charged with impaired operation cause death, operation – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus causing death, and dangerous operation cause death.
The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the collision between a white Hyundai Veloster and white Toyota that occurred Tuesday, Dec. 31 at about 7:20 p.m. near Elgin Mills Road and Ninth Line.
A York Regional Police officer had been following the Hyundai prior to the collision, according to the SIU.
The driver of the Toyota was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Earlier today, York Regional Police retweeted a post by @Denesh23, who said, "Someone decided to drive drunk on New Year's Eve, and it caused my uncle's life. ... And to anyone that warns your friends and family about the (RIDE) checks so they can divert are disgusting!"

Choy has been remanded in custody and is to appear again before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Jan. 6.

In 2019, York Regional Police laid more than 1,700 charges for impaired-related driving offences.
