City police have released these surveillance images in connection to an assault in downtown Barrie on Feb,. 24.

City police are searching for a suspect after a taxi driver was attacked with what is believed to have been a tire iron in downtown Barrie last month.

The alleged assault happened around 1 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the intersection of Mulcaster and Collier streets.

From the investigation that followed, police say the taxi driver was assaulted by an unknown male who "opened his unlocked door and began to strike him with a steel object that is believed to be a tire iron," according to a news release.

Police say the driver fought off his attacker and was tended to by Simcoe County paramedics. He did not require hospitalization for his injuries.

A short time after this attack, police say officers responded to a nearby call for service involving a male who matched the description.

"It was reported that he was checking out parked cars in the area," police stated in the release. "At one point, he attempted to steal a car, but was chased away by the owner."

Police say the person responsible for the assault and the subsequent incidents is a white man in his 40s, standing about five-foot-six. He was wearing a black jacket and "long" black shoes.

Police say investigators have been able to locate some images of the suspect, but there is no video surveillance of the assault on the taxi driver.
