The building of the old Bradford library

The old library at 100 Holland Court was open from November 1988 until April 2011

Postcard Memories is a series of historic views, stories and photos of Bradford West Gwillimbury, a trip down memory lane on a Saturday morning.

On Nov. 6, 1988 the Bradford Public Library officially opened at 100 Holland Court.

An official ribbon cutting ceremony was held, and in attendance were Mayor Bill dePeuter, Librarian Adrienne Price and Honorary Chairman Charlie Evans.

Following the ceremony, guests were welcomed to a reception held in the Compton Room, which was a room named after generous donors to the library, Marilyn and Gord Compton owners of the Bradford I.G.A. Store.

Fundraisers were held across town to help pay for the $250,000 project. One initiative to raise money included the 'be-a-brick-in-your-library' where residents pledged $250 for an inscribed brick, part of a special wall display inside the library. The campaign was started by neighbours on Mason Street who then challenged the rest of the town to contribute.

The Bradford Lions were also part of the fundraising campaign through their annual car draw event.

The library remained open until April 30, 2011, at which time was relocated to its current location at 425 Holland St. West.

The former library building at 100 Holland Crt. is now home to the Bradford West Gwillimbury Family Health Centre.
