The summer is the ideal time to get those exterior home renovations or updates (like driveway paving) completed. Are you aware of your responsibilities as a homeowner?

Driveway paving is the installation of a hard surface to an existing driveway. This includes the placement of asphalt, concrete, interlocking stone, flagstone, cobbles, gravel, brick, and other similar materials. Did you know that homeowners or their contractors are responsible for applying for and receiving a permit before paving can begin?

This permit approval ensures that the work being done complies with Town standards, that your water shut-off valve has been inspected before your new driveway is installed and that appropriate liability insurance and WSIB coverage is in place. Homeowners should keep in mind that qualified and reputable paving contractors should not have a problem going through this process. If your contractor is giving you a hard time and encouraging you not to follow the permit process, that should raise a red flag and be a cause for concern regarding your contractor’s work or qualifications.

Paving does not include driveway sealing or similar application of liquid top coat to an existing driveway, which does not require a permit.

If you are unsure if you require a permit, please contact our Transportation Division at 905 775 5369 prior to commencing any work.

Any driveway paving work done without a permit will be subject to the enforcement provisions of the Entrance and Driveway Width Extension By-law. Project delays, work orders, and monetary fines may be imposed for work done without a permit.
