CADET’S CORNER: 37 Air Cadet Squadron season kicks off

Several new cadets who joined the forces last week got their first glimpse at what being an air cadet looks like; 37 Air Cadet Squadron will continue to accept recruit applications throughout the year

Welcome to Cadets' Corner. The goal of Cadets' Corner is to help promote and recruit youth to the local Cadets Squadron.

The start of 2022/2023 37 Air Cadet Squadron season officially kicked off last Thursday, Sept. 22. The Squadron is meeting at Fieldcrest Elementary School this year, which was the location for the first two years until COVID-19 put them online.

Last week, several new cadets got their first glimpse at what being an air cadet looks like. Senior cadets organized and taught lessons such as shoe polishing, ironing their uniforms and what to do in a parade square. It was a great night for the senior cadets to lead and apply the information they have learned over their three-four years in air cadets.

The Squadron has a tagging date planned for Friday, Oct. 14, to Sunday, Oct. 16. You will see some of our cadets at local shops, including Walmart, No Frills, Zehrs, Sobeys and several others who have been approached. Please be generous as 100 per cent of the monies raised go right back into the cadets' hands.

Tagging is the #1 fundraiser that the cadets have and had brought in almost $2,000 when they participated in the spring last year. The monies raised go to pay for the gliding, survival weekends, events, permits for training as well as other activities.

Unfortunately, this year, the Air Cadet League will not be having their annual raffle, so cadets will not be selling tickets. However, they have an ongoing 50/50 draw online, for which anyone can purchase tickets, and 37 Squadron will receive 25 per cent of the monies from the tickets purchased. The jackpot is currently sitting at $8,335. To purchase these tickets, visit this website. Make sure you select 37 Squadron on the drop-down menu at checkout. Tickets are $10 for 10 tickets, $20 for 40 tickets or $40 for 500 tickets. There is an early bird draw for $1,000 on Oct. 13, 2022. The Grand Prize deadline is Oct. 27.

There is also a Comedy Night planned for February, open to the public at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 521; more details to follow.

37 Air Cadet Squadron will continually accept recruit applications throughout the year. Completed application packages will be accepted both online or in-person during our Thursday training nights at Fieldcrest Elementary School from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
