CADETS' CORNER: Cadets share what program means to them

Young cadets have high hopes for their time with local squadron

Cadets’ Corner is a weekly column submitted by the 37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron.

The 37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron cadets were asked recently about the cadet program.

Each week, a few cadets’ answers will be highlighted as part of Cadets’ Corner.

Flight Cpl. Papillon has been part of the squadron for 1.5 years, and being a cadet means showing up and being responsible. Her favourite part of air cadets are her friends, learning and leadership. She is most looking forward to the field training exercise in April. She hopes to earn the rank of sergeant and wants to be an emergency medical technician when she is old enough.

Cadet Purdy said being part of a team is what cadets mean to him, even in the five months he has been part of 37 Squadron after a friend told him about the program. He hopes to make the rank of sergeant and wants to be a robotics engineer when he is older.

Cpl. Stellato, who has been with 37 Squadron for 1.5 years, said the army was the reason he joined the cadets. He likes everything about the program and hopes to earn the rank of warrant officer second class with the squadron.

Sgt. Arora, at 15 years old, has been part of the program for 3.5 years. Being respectful and disciplined is what it means to be a cadet to him, and his favourite parts of cadets are the field training exercises and trips. He is most looking forward to the trip to Ottawa in May and hopes to earn the rank of warrant officer first class one day.

The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury community support program committee recently recognized 37 Squadron cadets by awarding them a community grant in the amount of $2,500.

Through the awarding of this grant, the committee recognizes the value of the organization to the well-being and growth of our community and in helping the town retain a strong community focus. Bravo Zulu, air cadets.

To coincide with community support, the cadets will be participating in the Coldest Night of the Year this Saturday, Feb. 24.
