CADETS' CORNER: Local squadron forming up for new season

37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron meetings return Sept. 14

Cadets’ Corner is a weekly column submitted by the 37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron.

The 37 Orville Hand Air Cadet Squadron will be participating in a variety of fun and challenging activities.

There is something for everyone — no matter what their personal interests may be. The outdoor enthusiast will appreciate learning survival skills for flight crew. The athlete will appreciate physical education and recreation, including Olympic-style marksmanship.

The curious will appreciate the hands-on activities such as building model aircraft. The scholarly will appreciate an introduction to the various tools and technologies linked to aviation. The dreamers will appreciate the evolution of technology and the advancements of the aerospace era, including the importance of Canadian participation.

Training will be conducted every Thursday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Fieldcrest Elementary School from September to June. Each training night will begin with an opening parade, two 30-minute classes, a break, one 30-minute class and a closing parade. Cadets are all divided into five proficiency levels, where they will have an opportunity to learn and interact with cadets of similar ages. Cadets are expected to attend all training nights and to be on the parade square formed up on time.

Uniforms are provided free of charge, including exchanges as cadets grow. Cadets are expected to maintain their uniforms and return them upon leaving the program.

Once registered with 37 Orville Hand, their new uniforms may take a few weeks to be ready. All new recruits are expected to wear a white buttoned dress shirt with a plain black tie, black pants (no jeans or leggings), and black shoes. Shirts are to be worn tucked in, and pant legs are to be free flowing, not tucked into socks.
