Celebrate International Women’s Day with free brunch in Bradford

Second annual networking event set to include speakers, music and entertainment at community centre on March 8 from noon to 2 p.m.

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate women and promote equality, then Ward 1 Coun. Cheraldean Duhaney has an event that might interest you.

To celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) on Friday, March 8, Duhaney will be hosting her second annual Women’s Day Brunch to recognize the achievements of women and promote networking, while also including speakers, entertainment and of course, brunch.

“International Women's Day is important to me because it celebrates women’s achievements, values their perspectives, and spreads awareness about gender equality,” Duhaney said via email.

The councillor is “very passionate” about fostering relationships in the community and noted that during her campaign constituents asked for spaces “where everyone can be themselves.”

There is no charge to attend from noon to 2 p.m. at the Bradford and District Community Memorial Centre at 125 Simcoe Rd., but guests are asked to bring a feminine product or non-perishable item for the Bradford Helping Hand Food Bank.

“My goal and mission is to raise awareness about the strength of unity and how empowering each other can inspire positive change,” Duhaney said. “This is not just an event; it is an experience!”

IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality, according to InternationalWomensDay.com.

For 2024, the theme is "inspire inclusion" and this year’s planning committee for the Bradford brunch includes: Anna Glotsky, Nusrat Awan, Jennifer Bahinski and Tiffany Tyrell-Shand.

Across the world, groups and individuals participate in campaigns, events, rallies, lobbying and performances, festivals, parties, fun runs and celebrations — all in recognition of IWD.

IWD has been recognized in different countries since 1911 and belongs to all groups collectively everywhere, without being specific to any one country or organization.

The community centre’s Don Harrison Auditorium has room for 150 people and anyone interested in this year’s brunch can register online through the Eventbrite page.
