Food bank hands out 400 Christmas hampers for families in need

Helping Hand Food Bank and the Bradford Lions Club were able to provide 400 families with holiday food hampers

With the holidays approaching, the Helping Hand Food Bank and Bradford Lions Club came together to make a positive difference in the community for those who are struggling.

Teaming up once again, this year the organizations were able to provide 400 families with holiday food hampers.

“I simply love this event and how for the volunteers it has become an annual Christmas tradition of giving back,” said the town's food bank liaison, Coun. Jonathan Scott. “It was organized like clockwork to provide clients their gift certificates and food smoothly and discretely, with cookies and other holiday baked goods to enjoy.”

This year, the “hamper,” was a gift card averaging $100 depending on the size of the family as per the request of the food bank clients. This allows for personal preference and dietary needs to be met.

On top of the gift card, the Lions Club also provided a choice of Christmas ham or chicken.

“The Food Bank is now serving 1,200 of our neighbours in need every month, more than ever,” added Scott. “The cost of groceries is higher than ever. So the need for community support is greater than ever.

"The Food Bank and the Lions are pillars of the community so seeing them come together to deliver Christmas cheer each year is a wonderful tradition and a proud part of what makes this a great community.”

The food bank is around 40 per cent of the way to reaching their holiday fundraising goal of $100,000 by New Year’s Eve. Those who wish to make a donation can here.
