Local resident pitches new speeding campaign to council

Local resident fed up with speeders in Bradford proposes signage campaign idea to council

Franceso Naso and his family moved from Toronto to Bradford in Oct. 2018 in search of a more peaceful, suburban lifestyle.

But lately, they are finding the roads in Bradford are becoming less and less safe, riddled with speed demons.

“The driving in the town of Bradford is certainly not what you would expect. I totally understand that there is currently a period of change with the urban sprawl of Toronto and the GTA creeping north and with it brings drivers that are used to driving aggressively on the road,” he outlined in an email sent to council on Aug. 22.

After witnessing too many near misses in the community, he has put forth an idea to the council and community about a “Slow Your Roll” campaign which involves the placement of “slow down” signs all over town, similar to ones he often sees in Toronto neighbourhoods.

“While some will say these signs do not work, I think we owe it to the public interest and broader community, in addition to adding another tool in the fight to prevent needless accidents while ensuring public safety,” he said.

His idea is to have the signs available for purchase for $5-$10, with the proceeds going toward the maintenance of local parks.

“I know a number of neighbours that have expressed their similar concerns repeatedly and are quite frustrated that they are not being heard. More importantly we are worried for the safety and well being of our families,” he said.

Naso’s email to council and the media has been put in the Traffic Committee’s agenda for this upcoming Tuesday’s meeting.

The public is welcome to attend the meeting and bring forward any traffic issues and concerns. Naso says he will try his best to make the meeting if he can make it home from work in time. It will be held in the Boardroom, Engineering Services at 305 Barrie St. at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday Aug. 27th.
