Newmarket house destroyed, another damaged in early morning fire

No cause determined for the blaze at the boarded-up house on Ontario Street that started around 1 a.m. Friday

A two-storey house was destroyed in a fire early Friday morning on Ontario Street in Newmarket.

The fire, which occurred at about 1 a.m., completely destroyed the house that was boarded up and listed for sale.

A neighbouring house was damaged, with the heat of the extensive flames melting its vinyl siding.

"Numerous fire trucks and YRP are on scene of active house fire. Avoid the area if possible due to heavy smoke in the air," York Regional Police Duty Office tweeted at 1:24 a.m Friday.

Central York Fire Services are currently on site to determine the cause.

According an incident report, five fire trucks with 16 firefighters and one platoon chief initially responded. Three additional trucks were then requested for a total of 28 firefighters deployed to the scene.

The cause of the incident remains unknown, says Central York Fire Services.

There were no injuries or casualties.

As a result of the fire, Ontario Street was closed between Main Street and Superior Street for the duration of the incident. It has since been reopened.
