OPP reminds residents of dirt biking regulations

Riding is not permitted on roadways, in parks, community centres, schools, conservation areas and stipulated walking trials

TOWN OF NEW TECUMSETH, ADJALA-TOSORONTIO & ESSA TOWNSHIPS - The Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to take the opportunity to review dirt bike off-road riding regulations.

Dirt bikes equipped with a green and white licence plate are not permitted for road use. The green licence plate is to be mounted on the front of the motorcycle.

Where you can legally ride:

  • Private property with permission from owner
  • Public Riding Area - Designated approved riding trials through the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders    (OFTR). Obtain a rider permit for trails all over the province to ride legally. For more information visit www.OFTR.ca

In order to ride legally within public riding areas, the following is mandatory:

  • Green or blue licence plate
  • Insured in accordance with section 2 of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and section 15 of the Off-Road Vehicles Act.
  • Registration (ownership)
  • Trail permit sticker (OFTR)
  • Wear a Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) approved or equivalent helmet that complies with section 19 of the Off-Road Vehicles Act.

Please remember dirt bike riding is not permitted on roadways, in parks, community centres, schools, conservation areas and stipulated walking trials.

Exceptions to the above: A dirt bike with a blue and white street licence plate can ride on the roadway and trails. A blue, street plate is to be mounted on the rear of the motorcycle. The driver of the dirt bike shall hold a valid Class M1, M2 or M driver's licence. The rider shall obey and follow the rules of the road in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
