'Real privilege'; BWG library hosts award-winning jazz pianist

A second event will be held Feb. 19 featuring steelpan musician D'Jango Pan Fyah and guest speaker Debbie Opki-Mulder

The Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library and Cultural Centre hosted a special performance for the Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival with Afro Cuban and Latin jazz pianist Hilario Durán on Sunday afternoon.

The multiple Juno award-winning and Grammy-nominated artist performed alongside percussion virtuoso Jorge Luis Torres, a.k.a. ‘Papiosco.'

Durán is also a Canadian National Jazz Award winner and the proud recipient of the 2007 Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to Afro-Cuban Jazz and Latin Jazz.

"It's a real privilege to host such a world-class artist, right here in Bradford West Gwillimbury,” said the BWG Library and Cultural Centre’s Manager of Cultural Services, David Di Giovanni. “Major thanks to Robin at the Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival for making this happen."

The library, in partnership with local group Making Change, will be hosting a second event on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 2-4 p.m. It will include an afternoon of Black history education from guest speaker Debbie Opki-Mulder, as well as live music by steelpan musician D'Jango Pan Fyah.
