Soon, your kids are off school for two weeks for Christmas vacation.

What are you going to do to keep them entertained?

Tourism Simcoe County has some ideas.

“Simcoe County is an absolute winter playground,” said Brendan Matheson, experience development co-ordinator with Tourism Simcoe County. “There’s so much to do, and not just for the ‘hard-cores’ either.”

While Tourism Simcoe County doesn’t run many programs themselves, the role of the department is to aggregate tourism opportunities across the county from a variety of privately owned operators to create a one-stop-shop on their website for residents and visitors to see all the opportunities available to them. Activities can be booked through the site.

Winter activities touted on the site include fatbiking, skating, skiing, ice fishing, showshoeing, snowtubing, snowmobiling, sleigh rides and cross-country skiing. The county is also in the midst of constructing the Simcoe County Museum skate trail, which is slated to open in the new year.

“There’s something for everyone,” he said.

Matheson said the Christmas holidays are some of the busiest times of the year in the region, with outsiders coming up to see everything the county has to offer.

“We’re running a digital advertising campaign between now and March Break. The goal is just to get people to come here and experience winter in Simcoe County,” he said.

New this year, Matheson says Hardwood Ski and Bike is running groomer tours.

“So, if the kids are out cross-country skiing, mom and dad can jump in the groomer, stay warm and have a hot chocolate while exploring the trails,” he said. “It’s pretty unique.”
