Town councillors, appointees cost $392K last year: Report

Wages and expenses shared by Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury, County of Simcoe and conservation authorities

The numbers are in and local members of council, committees and boards were paid almost $372,629 in wages and $19,508 in expenses in Bradford during 2023.

A report on the council remuneration for 2023 prepared by Nathalie Carrier, deputy treasurer, breaks down the pay for members of council and other local representatives compensated for serving on boards or committees, and council received the report for information during its regular meeting on Feb. 6.

Those amounts include wages, benefits paid by the employer, per diems (daily compensations) for special meetings or conferences, allocation for mileage, phones, internet access, compensation for workshops/seminars and any other remuneration paid by external boards — including the County of Simcoe and two conservation authorities.

In 2023, each of the seven councillors received a wage of more than $24,969, with $31,255 for Deputy Mayor Raj Sandhu and about $46,867 for Mayor James Leduc.

Each of the seven councillors received $1,500 for mileage, with $2,000 for the deputy mayor and $3,000 for the mayor. All nine received $540 for internet.

Compensation for phones ranged between $216 and $1,172, with an average of $479 and a total of $4,314.

Benefit claims varied from $1,967 to as much as $5,529, with an average of $3,452 and total of $31,066.

Only one councillor received local per diem compensation, totalling $525, while the deputy mayor got $600 and the mayor took in $1,500.

Library board honorariums were $1,000 for each of the four members and two councillors totalling $6,000.

Compensation for the nine members of the Holland Marsh Drainage System Joint Municipal Services Board varied between $300 and $600, and totalled $4,100.

Compensation for the five members of the committee of adjustment varied between $480 and $780, and totalled $3,240, plus $150 each for memberships totalling $750.

As members of county council, the deputy mayor and mayor received $18,053 and $24,488, respectively, and the mayor also received $3,208 as a member of police services board.

As a member of the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Ward 5 Coun. Peter Ferragine received nearly $4,196, and as a member of the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority, Ward 2 Coun. Jonathan Scott got almost $2,385.

The cost for registration, accommodation, meals, mileage and parking to send members of council to conferences for the Ontario Good Roads Association, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities totalled $14,443.

Council received the report without discussion.
