17-year-old girl killed in vehicle rollover last night

A tragic end to a collision in Barrie's north end on last night has police investigating the cause

A 17-year-old Barrie girl was killed in last night's single-vehicle rollover on Georgian Drive.

At 9:10 p.m., Wednesday, Barrie police were called to a serious crash in the city's north end, near the Duckworth Street intersection.

The street was closed off from traffic until 3:15 a.m., this morning.

Two people were transported to nearby Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) where the girl died from her injuries.

The 17-year-old male driver is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Simcoe County paramedics transported the two occupants to hospital and, shortly after arrival, the 17-year-old girl was pronounced deceased due to the injuries caused by the collision,” said Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon.

While no cause has been determined, Leon also said the crash is clearly an emotional one, and police will be making sure all possible causes are investigated.

“The investigation is ongoing and our traffic unit will be completing a thorough investigation,” he said. “They will be looking at a number of various aspects of the collision.

“This is a terrible set of circumstances and when you look at the time frame, even more sad," he added. "Being that it happened between first and second semester, we can only assume there will be many grieving the loss of a young life.”
